It’s easy to look at their thick, fluffy coats and think that Alaskan Klee Kai don’t need any sort of special protection in the winter. After all, their name starts with “Alaskan”; how much more rugged and outdoorsy can you get? Well, as it turns out, our little Alaskan Klee Kai pals need our help to protect them from the elements, scary chemicals and more during the winter months. Let’s dive into some tips on how to protect your Alaskan Klee Kai this winter:

  • Bring your dog inside as quickly as possible.

Don’t leave your pup outside for extended periods of time in inclement weather, especially if it is snowing or icy out. The thermometer may say one thing, but if your pet is begging to come in, absolutely let them in! Ideally, get them inside before they’re so cold they are begging to come in. Frostbite and frostnip sets in quickly, especially with smaller dogs like the Klee Kai.

  • Give them a good shelter outside.

If your dog is going to be outside for any period of time...

Oftentimes, people who live in apartments put off adopting dogs until they live in larger spaces or have access to a yard. While it’s definitely important to consider the size of the dog you’re looking to adopt when living in an apartment, dogs can be happy apartment-dwellers, too. And Alaskan Klee Kai can be perfect dogs for smaller living spaces like apartments.

Alaskan Klee Kai are really pretty small dogs — generally about 10-20 lbs. in weight —- and they don’t require a whole lot of room. That being said, there are some important things that apartment dwellers should know about getting an Alaskan Klee Kai:

  • They will need to be crate-trained. It’s generally recommended to crate-train your Alaskan Klee Kai no matter what kind of dwelling you occupy, but it’s especially important in an apartment. Puppies who are not being crate trained can get very destructive, very quickly. From chewing on anything their eyes...

Training can be one of the most rewarding exercises you do with your dog. It feels so good when the light goes on, it finally clicks, and they complete the trick or movement you’re asking them to do. On the other hand, it can be intensely frustrating when your dog is being stubborn. Today we’re going to talk about seven different tips to use when training a stubborn dog. Let’s get started!

  1. Be consistent. Sometimes it’s not that your dog is stubborn, it’s that they are confused. Different people in their lives might be rewarding them for behaviors that you are trying to get them to stop doing. They have no way of knowing what’s right or wrong, because they’re getting mixed messages from their humans. It’s essential that anyone coming into contact with your dog knows the verbiage you use and the commands you have in place, including hand signals, when interacting with your dog, so that they don’t confuse them. This can happen very easily, too: say you’re trying to break your dog from jumping up on people, but your kids let him jump up on them...

You’re getting a mini husky puppy, also known as an Alaskan Klee Kai! That’s so exciting, and we’re certain that you are going to have so much fun together. Like any relationship, however, it’s important to get things off on the right foot as immediately as possible. This means that it’s especially important to puppy-proof and puppy-ready your home for your wonderful new furry friend. Let’s get started!

  1. Put everything away that you don’t want your puppy to get their paws or, more importantly, their mouths on. This means making sure they can’t chew on any wires lying around, plants, appliances, curtains...mini husky puppies are especially curious and anywhere their little paws will take them, they will go. And get into. And start chewing. Even if you don’t think your puppy can get to it: if it’s on or near the ground and they want to know what it is (they do), they will figure out a way to get into it, so be especially vigilant. Being overly protective beats a trip to...

Klee Kai eye colors are simply breathtaking. You can almost get lost in their beauty and variety. They present in a plentiful assortment, but they are all incredible combinations.

Along with their absolutely beautiful coats, Alaskan Klee Kai have numerous variations within their eye colors that make them astonishingly stunning dogs. Today we’ll discuss the different eye colors that Alaskan Klee Kai might have, as well as some things that, as the owner or potential owner of one of these unique dogs, you may want to be aware of.

One eye color among Alaskan Klee Kai is brown, and their brown eyes — from pale brown or almost golden or tawny to rich, deep dark brown — really stand out against their different colors of coats and the colors of their masks. They can one moment invoke a playful, happy energy and in the next a soulfulness that is extraordinary to behold.

Let’s get right down to brass tacks here, okay? Alaskan Klee Kai are adorable. They are such cute dogs. They are so cute, in fact, that they probably take more of an advantage of their owners than their owners know. And that can lead to one super-annoying, possibly even dangerous, behavioral characteristic that you don’t want to see your dog continue to display: stubbornness.

Like all animals, Alaskan Klee Kai have little wills of their own. When their little will is aligned with your will, it’s okay and everything works great. But when they are opposed to what you want to do, watch out! Tempers can flare quickly.

The reason that Alaskan Klee Kai can be so stubborn is that they are incredibly smart little dogs. They have a high IQ, so they can very easily be trained. Unfortunately if they are not properly trained beginning at an early age, bad habits can creep in and stubbornness can start to root itself in your dog. You really don’t want this: it’s a lot easier to train a puppy than to try to...

Grooming tips for your alaskan klee kai

One question that gets asked a lot is: how often do I need to bathe my Alaskan Klee Kai? The breed certainly looks as though it might require a lot of maintenance and upkeep as far as bathing and grooming go, with all of that beautiful, soft, fluffy fur! Today we’ll discuss how to keep your Klee Kai in tip-top shape.

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a breed that actually doesn’t require a lot of routine maintenance in terms of bathing and grooming, even though they are a double-coated breed. What this means is they have a top coat that is made up of longer guard hairs, and a soft, dense undercoat that they shed twice a year. As far as bathing goes, your Klee Kai probably won’t need a bath any more frequently than every three or four months. More frequent bathing may dry out their skin. Here are some tips for bathing your Alaskan Klee Kai:

  • Since they are small-to-medium sized dogs, bathing them in a sink is simplest.

  • Make sure to spend some time...

Early socialization is the MOST important thing you can do for your puppy, but unfortunately most new owners misunderstand what socialization actually means.

I can not stress enough how important early socialization for your new puppy is. Without proper early socializing you are setting your puppy for potential behavioral issues such as reactivity, anxiety, hyperactivity, excessive barking, aggression, poor manners, etc etc.

Socialization is creating purposeful, positive experiences for your puppy to prepare them for life in the human world. Socialization is not the same thing as exposure. It is not enough to just expose your puppy to lots of things. You must ensure they are having a positive experience.

Nothing is more important than early socializing. You can give them the highest quality food, the best toys, delicious treats and lots of love, but more important than all of those things is proper early socializing. This is the foundation to having a well rounded, confident, obedient, perfect companion.

A lot of dog owners are not aware that...

KLEE KAI EYE COLORS.png

The Alaskan Klee Kai can have eyes in several different eye colors. Brown is the most common eye color for dogs, but many Alaskan Klee Kai have striking blue eyes. They can also have various shades of brown eyes, hazel eyes and green eyes. Bi-eyes are not as common as the blue or brown, none the less, bi-eyes are possible with the Alaskan Klee Kai. Bi-eyed dogs have two different colored eyes. The Alaskan Klee Kai breed can also have parti-eyes, which is when one eye can have two colors within the same eye.

The most commonly sought after are the striking blue eyes. Which isn’t surprising considering the Siberian Husky is known for their beautiful blue eyes and the Alaskan Klee Kai is meant to be a companion sized version of the Husky.

If you are thinking about getting an Alaskan Klee Kai, then one question you most likely have is how big do Alaskan Klee Kai get? If you are already the proud owner of an Alaskan Klee Kai puppy then you may be asking your breeder, what size will my Alaskan Klee Kai be full grown? Most people are not referring to height when they are asking about the Klee Kai size, they want to know how much their Klee Kai will weigh. Which makes sense because, this breed is the perfect apartment size dog breed and most apartments have weight restrictions for pets, not height restrictions.

The Alaskan Klee Kai come in 3 sizes. Toy, Miniature and Standard. The Alaskan Klee Kai are intended to remain a small to medium sized dog. The 3 sizes are distinguished by their height, not by their weight. We are often asked how much a toy size Klee Kai will weigh full grown. Since the size of the Klee Kai is not determined by their weight, but rather their height, we can only give an educated guess based on the puppies appearance and our experience over the last 16 years. Alaskan Klee Kai puppies are some of the cutest, sweetest, wiliest and most fun dogs out there. They are an absolute blast to play with and it’s really easy to fall in love with them quickly. Like any animal, however, Alaskan Klee Kai require considerable attention and training. Here are ten fun facts about our favorite dog breed:

  • Alaskan Klee Kai are a fairly new breed; they have only been around since the 1970s. The Alaskan Klee Kai breed is the result of Linda Spurlin breeding Alaskan husky dogs with other smaller breed dogs and extensively propagated the breed through culling and reproductive controls.

  • “Klee Kai” means “small dog” in the Inuit language; Alaskan Klee Kai are recognized by the American Rare Breed Association and the United Kennel Club (the 2nd largest dog breed registering body in the United States.)

We are a family oriented breeder of the Alaskan Klee Kai located in Southern California. The first time we caught glimpse of this amazing breed we just knew we had to add an Alaskan Klee Kai to our family. After obsessing over these beautiful little huskies and reaching out to several different klee kai breeders. We finally found a wonderful breeder named Andrea Hays and after what seemed like forever, we finally brought Kika home in August 2003. Over the last 16 years we have shown our dogs in conformation shows with UKC and ARBA all over the United States. We have produced multiple Best in Show Klee Kai, competed in UKC's Top Ten competition in Michigan State for several years before taking some time off to focus on family and give birth to our youngest son. Socializing Your Alaskan Klee Kai

When you hear the word “socialize” you likely think of helping your alaskan klee kai puppy learn to play with other dogs, but puppy socialization includes much more than that! Socialization is all about helping your pup navigate the world safely. This includes everything from meeting new dogs to encountering unfamiliar situations and handling them calmly. We created this handy guide on how to socialize a puppy. These tips are sure to help guide your pup’s social development.

Why it’s Important to Socialize Your Alaskan Klee Kai Puppy

Socializing your pup is critical for developing a well-rounded, even-tempered, patient companion. Just like people, dogs tend to fear what they don’t understand, so the more you can help your pup understand, the better! This will help him feel confident and give and him the tools he needs to navigate unfamiliar situations. As a result, he’ll be tolerant and calm when encountering new people, sounds, smells, environments, and more. A well-socialized dog is less...

Miniature Husky puppy from Kikas Klee Kai

Very small dogs are becoming more popular amongst pet owners. A striking example is with Alaskan Klee Kai and Miniature Huskies, And while these smaller forms can be quite similar, they are actually of different breeds. The Alaskan Klee Kai has been around much longer than the Miniature Husky.

Alaskan Klee Kai

As for Alaskan Klee Kai, they are a breed of their own. The breed was created by Linda Spurlin in the late 1970’s. She used 4 breeds through selective breeding and 20 years of dedication to achieve the look she visioned, a miniature version of the husky. The 4 breeds are Alaskan Husky, Siberian Husky, Schipperke and American Eskimo. The Alaskan Klee Kai became a recognized breed in 1997 with the United Kennel Club (UKC) and The American Rare Breed Association (ARBA). They usually weight between 10 to 25 pounds and come in a variety of colors. What is more, they tend to resemble Siberian Huskies more than Alaskan huskies.

Klee Kai are also bred in three different sizes. They are as follows:

Standard (15 to 17.5 inches)Miniature (13...

I have frequently been asked how the Alaskan Klee Kai tolerate the heat. Northern breeds, such as the Alaskan Klee Kai have a double coat; an undercoat that is short and soft and an outer coat that is made of longer guard hairs. This double coat allows them to have thermal protection from extreme hot and cold weather.

They adapt to the climate they are in, therefore a dog that lives in a colder climate will generally have a thicker undercoat than a dog that lives in a warmer climate. I have purchased adult dogs from breeders that live in cold climates and notice that when they shed or blow their undercoat it doesn't grow back as thick as it was when they lived in a colder area. They do blow their coats twice a year regardless of where they live.

We are located in Southern California and it can get pretty warm during the summer months. Our dogs don't seem too bothered by the heat and lots of time they prefer lay out in the sun instead of in the shade. They will play in their water bowl or get their feet wet in the pool occasionally. Dogs do not sweat like people do;...
