Alaskan Klee Kai: A Little History

The Alaskan Klee Kai as a breed emerged in the 1970s when Linda Spurlin, who lived in Alaska, wanted to develop a companion-sized version of the Alaskan husky. It took some doing but by 1988 they made the Alaskan Klee Kai available to others. Interestingly, it was originally called the Klee Kai, which is Eskimo for “little dog”, but this got changed to “Alaskan Klee Kai” in 1995. Since then the breed has been getting more and more recognition as a distinct breed of its own, separate from the Alaskan husky (though often, and sometimes confusingly, they are referred to as “mini huskies”). The Alaskan Klee Kai was first recognized as a breed in 1997 by the United Kennel Club.

They Are So Clever

Alaskan Klee Kai are very intelligent, high-energy dogs. They are not however considered “hyper” dogs; they don’t get all hyped up and then not know what to do with their energy. They are highly trainable and make excellent watchdogs. Because they are clever, they make great escape artists and often prank their owners by making their way through fences and taking advantage of their small size to squeeze through places easily that no human would dare think of trying.

If you own an Alaskan Klee Kai, you know what the object of their affection is: it’s YOU. Alaskan Klee Kai can be quite shy and require their owner’s attention, especially if they are uncomfortable in a group or crowd of people. This can make things difficult especially as many people, especially little kids, want to pet them. This is why it is so essential to socialize your Klee Kai and make sure you do it within the “socialization window” or period of time when they handle socializing training well. And really, socializing is all about exposing your Klee Kai to as many people as possible so that they are comfortable around strangers and friends alike. Otherwise, they can become painfully depressed and withdrawn.
